Abstract: Reports on Middle East Development (2018-2019), with the theme of people-to-people exchange between China and the Middle East, gives a comprehensive summary and assessment of people-to-people exchanges between China and the Middle Eastern region and major countries. Reports first briefly reviews and evaluates the achievements, characteristics and significance of people-to-people exchanges between China and the Middle East during the previous 40 years of reform and opening up, analyzing and forecasting the problems, challenges and development prospects. Reports point out that under the background of China and the Middle East countries’ jointly building of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, people-to-people exchanges between the two sides not only have broad prospects for development, but also have important practical significance for deepening the relationship between China and the Middle East countries. On this basis, reports also analyze and evaluate the overall situation of people-to-people exchanges between China and Arab countries, as well as the people-to-people exchanges between China and four major countries in the region — Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Israel.

The special report “Middle East Regional Situation and Outside Powers’ Middle East Diplomacy” is a permanent column of the reports, reflecting the importance the reports attaches to the general situation in the Middle East and the subregions. First, the report summarizes and analyzes the political, economic and security situation in the two subregions of the Middle East, West Asia and North Africa. Second, the report analyzes the roots and performance of the competition for regional leadership between two Middle Eastern countries, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Finally, the report reviews, summarizes and predicts the Middle East diplomacy of the US, Europe, Russia, and China.

The special report “Reports on Major Countries in the Middle East” is a permanent column and a major feature of the reports, highlighting the importance of the reports attaches to major countries’ situations. The report systematically studies and analyzes the development of politics, economic situation and foreign relations in major Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Algeria, Iran, Turkey and Israel respectively.
