On April 15, 2026,the 132nd lecture of the Think Tank Construction Lecture Series of the Middle East Studies Institute (MESI) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was held at Songjiang Campus. Professor María Constanza Costa of the Department of Political Science at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina was invited to give a lecture titled The Ripple Effects of the Iran War on Latin America: How a Distant Conflict Could Reshape Energy, Economics, Security, and Diplomacy Across the Region.
The lecture was hosted by Assistant Research Fellow Shu Meng of the MESI at SISU. Zhao Jing of the MESI at SISU, as well as graduate students and international students attended this lecture.
Professor Costa systematically analyzed the multifaceted impacts of the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict on Latin American countries from five dimensions: energy, macroeconomics, society, security, and diplomacy. She pointed out that although the conflict is taking place in a region geographically distant from Latin America, it has already had a profound impact on Latin American nations through channels such as energy price fluctuations, inflationary spillovers, geopolitical shifts, and security spillover effects, triggering a global chain reaction.

Following the lecture, Professor Costa engaged in an interactive discussion with faculty and students in attendance on issues such as security risks, diplomatic opportunities, and prospects for regional cooperation in Latin America.
Finally, Shu Meng summarized the lecture’s content and expressed gratitude to Professor Costa for her insightful presentation and to the faculty and students present for their active participation.
