On May 14, 2026, the 133rd lecture of the Think Tank Construction Lecture Series of the Middle East Studies Institute (MESI) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was held at Songjiang Campus. Professor Adam Hanieh, Director of the SOAS Middle East Institute, was invited to give a lecture titled A New Global Order? Implications of the US-Israeli Attacks on Iran for the Middle East, China, and South-East Asia.
The lecture was hosted by Researcher Zhang Yuan of the MESI at SISU. Qian Xuming, Shu Meng and Zhao Jing of the MESI at SISU, as well as graduate students and international students attended this lecture.
Professor Hanieh systematically analyzed the multiple geopolitical consequences that a U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict might trigger from various perspectives, including the evolution of the global energy landscape, the rising economic power of Gulf states, and the trend of trade and investment in the Gulf region shifting eastward. He also explored the impact of such a conflict on the Middle East, China, and Southeast Asia. He pointed out that against the backdrop of this conflict, the future trajectory of the global order will be profoundly influenced by several key factors: the stability of the Gulf Alliance, the internal situation in Iran and the movements of its regional allies, the process of normalizing relations between Gulf states and Israel, the evolution of regional infrastructure and trade networks, and the organizational approach to post-war reconstruction.

Following the lecture, Professor Hanieh engaged in an interactive discussion with faculty and students in attendance on topics such as the future trajectory of U.S.-Gulf relations and the response strategies of Iran and its regional allies.
Finally, Researcher Zhang Yuan summarized the lecture’s content and expressed gratitude to Professor Hanieh for his insightful presentation and to the faculty and students present for their active participation.
