SISU holds “Dubbing into Universities” seminar with Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio

The seminar is a part of the 2015 Dubbing Workshop of Films and Televisions, an initiative by China's Ministry of Culture.

A seminar of “Dubbing into Universities” took place in the Hongkou campus of SISU on June 14, jointly held by Shanghai Film Dubbing Studio (SFDS) and Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation (GIIT) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU).

The seminar is a part of the 2015 Dubbing Workshop of Films and Televisions, an inititive by China's Ministry of Culture. It appealed about 80 attendants, including dubbing experts and directors from America, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan, and teachers and students from GIIT in SISU.

Dr. Bao Chengzhang, a research fellow in SISU's Middle East Studies Institute (MESI), introduced the situation of dubbing films and the demands of local residents in Middle East and gave advice on promoting dubbing films in Middle East area.

He pointed out that special attentions should be paid on local culture and customs when dubbing the Chinese films and television dramas into Arabic language.

Professor Shi Banyu from Taiwan, who has dubbed for over 300 films and television dramas,shared funny stories during his dubbing of the films directed by Stephen Chow, a famous Chinese comedian. Shi also sang the movie music and brought the house down.

A Korea Professor Kim Soon-Hee from Sungkyunkwan University introduced the differences between Chinese and Korean in translation, such as people’s appellation and the word order.

Meanwhile, Michal Vieques, an American director and dubbing actor who dubbed the television Moment in Peking, shared the stories during the drama dubbing. He emphasized that the screen play translation should be focused on the meaning, rather than the words.

Another dubbing director in Dior Production Company, Christopher Boys, recalled the story of watching dubbing films when he was nine.

He emphasized the importance of subtitle translation and suggested establishing a vocabulary of important words to reduce the mistakes during translation.

Afterwards, the director of GTC Technology Co. LTD, Bai Xiaoguang, showed a live demo of operating the dubbing software.

In the last question-and-answer session, specialist communicated with students and showed great expectations to the students in GIIT.
