Speaker Biography: Ashley Townshend is an independent researcher specializing in international security and Asian strategic affairs with a regional focus on China, Northeast Asia, and the Indo-Pacific region. He has held research positions in think-tanks, universities, and the non-profit sector; and is currently working on a commissioned report examining maritime confidence-building measures in Asia for the Lowy Institute for International Policy.
Ashley’s research interests include Asian security, Chinese foreign policy, Sino-South Asian relations, instability on the Korean Peninsula, Australian foreign and defense policy, maritime security, alliance politics, geopolitics, and military intervention. His writing and commentary have featured in Yale Global, CNN, Sky News, The South China Morning Post, The Age, and The Australian, among other academic and media outlets.
