The 8th International Forum on Asia and the Middle East

Security and Development in the Middle East from the Perspective of Global Security and Development

Shanghai, China

September 16-17, 2023

In September 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Development Initiative at the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. And in April 2022, President Xi put forward the Global Security Initiative at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference. Both of the two global initiatives are important international public goods provided by China to the world, offering Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to maintain world peace, promote common development and facilitate the building of a Community of Shared Future for Mankind. How to promote economic and social development and build a common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security architecture in the Middle East within the framework of the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative is not only an urgent priority for global governance, but also a major project requiring in-depth study. In order to strengthen international exchanges and contribute to the security and development of the Middle East, Shanghai International Studies University will hold the 8th International Forum on Asia and the Middle East in Shanghai, China, on September 16-17, 2023 (Saturday and Sunday). The Forum, co-hosted by the Middle East Studies Institute at Shanghai International Studies University and the Chinese Association of Middle East Studies, will be on the theme “Security and Development in the Middle East from the Perspective of Global Security and Development”.

We warmly welcome experts and scholars to contribute to this great academic event. Papers in any of the topic areas listed below or related areas are welcomed:

1.     Global Development Initiative and Middle East Development

2.     Global Security Initiative and Middle East Security

3.     International High-tech Cooperation and Development in the Middle East Countries

4.     High-quality Co-construction of the “Belt and Road” and Development in the Middle East

5.     Construction of Middle East Security Architecture and Gulf Security Architecture

6.     History, Politics, Society and Regional Security in the Middle East

7.     Economy, Energy, Food Issues and Regional Development in the Middle East

8.     Other Related Topics

Leading experts and scholars in the field of Middle Eastern studies will be invited to deliver keynote speeches at the Forum. The working language of the Forum is English. The forum will be held in the form of a combination of online and offline. For anyone interested participant, please submit relevant materials on time as follows:

1.   A proposal (in English) and a registration form (attached below) should be submitted to ifame@shisu.edu.cnby May 15, 2023The proposal should include the title and abstract of the paper (300 words min), name, title and institutional affiliation of the author, and his email address and a brief C.V. (100 words max).

2.   Full draft paper should be submitted in English by email to ifame@shisu.edu.cnby July 152023. The length of the submitted paper should be no less than 5,500 words.

The full text of the paper (in English) should be sent to the official email address of the forum ifame@shisu.edu.cn within two weeks after the end of the conference. The paper should be in accordance with the English academic standard, with no less than 5,500 words.

A confirmation letter will be sent 2 weeks after the submission of the proposal. Selected excellent conference papers will be compiled and published by well-known publishing houses at home and abroad, or recommended for publication on the English Journal Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (ESCI, Published by Routledge).
