Lecture 128 of the Think Tank Construction Series “Development of International Relations after the US Presidential Elections” Successfully Held

On November 29, 2024, the 128th lecture of the Think Tank Construction Lecture Series of the Middle East Studies Institute (MESI) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was held at Hongkou Campus. Associate Professor Efe Can of Gürcanat Istinye University in Turkey was invited to give a lecture titled Development of International Relations after the US Presidential Elections. The lecture was hosted by Associate Researcher Bao Chengzhang of the MESI at SISU. Serdar Yurtçiçek, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Turkish Studies of Shanghai University participated in the conversation. Researchers and graduate students attended this lecture.

Starting from the concept of populism, Associate Professor Gürcan analyzed the ideology and political culture in the domestic and foreign affairs of the United States from the starting point of populism in American political history, and used the Trump's first administration's policy platform as an example to provide an in-depth analysis of the impacts of populism on the US foreign, economic, and cultural policies, as well as the direction of the international relations after the US election.

In the dialogue session, Dr. Serdar Yurtçiçek analyzed the negative impact of the US relations with allies and other world powers in recent years from a populist perspective, providing insights on the impact of populism on international relations and global governance.

After the lecture, Associate Professor Gürcan and Dr. Serdar Yurtçiçek interacted with the students and faculty on the potential impact of the U.S. election results on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the direction of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East, and the impact of populism on the domestic and foreign affairs of Middle Eastern countries.
