Lecture 129 of the Think Tank Construction Series “Islamic Studies in the Italian Context: from the Renaissance to the Present” Successfully Held

On May 16, 2025, the 129th lecture of the Think Tank Construction Lecture Series of the Middle East Studies Institute (MESI) of Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) was held at Hongkou Campus. The Rector Roberto Tottoli of the Istituto Universitario Orientale di NAPOL was invited to give a lecture titled Islamic Studies in the Italian Context: from the Renaissance to the Present.

The lecture was hosted by Professor Ding Jun, Director of the MESI at SISU. Researchers including Zhao Jun, Qian Xuming, Han Jianwei, Shu Meng, Wen Shaobiao and Zhao Jing, as well as graduate students and international students attended this lecture.

Professor Roberto Tottoli took the time as a clue, systematically sorted out the important achievements in the field of Islamic studies in Italian academia from the Renaissance period to the present, highlighted the representative figures in the relevant fields in each period, and analyzed in depth the unique path of the development and evolution of this discipline in Italy and its unique role in communicating between the East and the West in civilization.

Professor Roberto Tottoli also interacted with the students and faculty on topics such as the comparative advantages of Islamic studies between Italy and other European countries, the potential for cooperation between Chinese and Italian scholars in the field of Islamic studies, and the research trends and interests of young Italian scholars.

Finally, Director Ding Jun summarized the lecture and expressed his gratitude to Professor Roberto Tottoli for his wonderful lecture and the active participation of teachers and students.

After the lecture, Director Ding Jun and the editorial staff of Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (AJMEIS) of the MESI at SISU had a discussion withProfessor Roberto Tottoli. They discussed the construction of international academic journals and academic forums, mutual visits of scholars and postgraduate students, and reached a consensus on further exchanges and cooperation in related fields.
